چکیده
Poison b a i t s are extensively used for commensal rodent control; considerable folk lore e x i s t s regarding the use of a d d i t i v e s to induce rodents to come to and eat poison b a i t s . T h i s paper describes a rational evaluation of attractants and the i n f l u e n c e of different odours in i n d u c i n g Rattus norvegicus to feed at g i v e n locations. The influence of certain repellents was also examined. Tests consisted of attempts to induce rats to feed at non-preferred s i t e s or to repel them from preferred s i t e s . P l a c e preference was the dominant factor in feeding by rats, and odours f a i l e d to influence feeding activity significantly.

Influence of attractants and repellents on methyl group turnover on methyl-accepting chemotaxis proteins of Bacillus subtilis and role of CheW.
The ability of attractants and repellents to affect the turnover of methyl groups on the methyl-accepting chemotaxis proteins (MCPs) was examined for Bacillus subtilis. Attractants were found to cause an increase in the turnover of methyl groups esterified to the MCPs, while repellents caused a decrease. These reactions do not require CheW. However, a cheW null mutant exhibits enhanced turnover...
متن کاملChemical probes of bacterial signal transduction reveal that repellents stabilize and attractants destabilize the chemoreceptor array.
The signal transduction cascade responsible for bacterial chemotaxis serves as a model for understanding how cells perceive and respond to their environments. Bacteria react to chemotactic signals by migrating toward attractants and away from repellents. Recent data suggest that the amplification of attractant stimuli depends on receptor collaboration: occupied and unoccupied chemoreceptors act...
متن کاملTowards slime mould chemical sensor: Mapping chemical inputs onto electrical potential dynamics of Physarum Polycephalum
Plasmodium of slime mould Physarum polycephalum is a large single celled organism visible unaided by the eye. This slime mould is capable of optimising the shape of its protoplasmic networks in spatial configurations of attractants and repellents. Such adaptive behaviour can be interpreted as computation. When exposed to attractants and repellents, Physarum changes patterns of its electrical ac...
متن کاملMembrane potential changes during chemokinesis in Paramecium.
Intracellular recordings show that (i) paramecia hyperpolarize slightly in attractants and depolarize in repellents that depend on the avoiding reaction (an abrupt change of swimming direction), and (ii) paramecia more strongly hyperpolarize in repellents and more strongly depolarize in attractants that depend on changes of swimming velocity. These membrane potential changes are in agreement wi...
متن کاملChemo-accumulation without changes in membrane potential in the microstome form of the ciliate Tetrahymena vorax.
The swimming behaviour of ciliates is mainly determined by membrane potential and transmembrane fluxes. In a chemical gradient, swimming ciliates may approach or move away from the source. Based on experiments on Paramecium, it is generally assumed that chemical attractants and repellents affect the swimming behaviour of ciliates by specific changes in the membrane potential. We have examined w...
